Giving back is an essential part of life but often gets put on the back burner. Because we get busy with the daily grind, it sounds overwhelming, and we think “later”. So when Jewelers Mutual Insurance Company approached me to talk about giving back I knew exactly what I wanted to talk about… easy ways to give back! There are so many ways to start making a positive impact on your local community and it doesn’t have to be hard, or expensive, or extremely time consuming. Dan and I are passionate about collecting goods for a specific charity near our house but I’ve got 10 more fun ideas to get you started below!
But first I wanted to mention that Jewelers Mutual is launching a giving campaign called Band Together, in which they’re giving away 2 million dollars (wow!) to charitable organizations ($1 million to the winner, $700,000 and $300,000 to the runners up). They need your votes to help decide how to allocate the money, so log on and vote for health, home, or hunger (St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Habitat for Humanity, and Feeding America or Food Banks Canada).
I’ve actually been a Jewelers Mutual customer for years, so I’m thrilled to know that we’ve been supporting a company with heart. Are you ready for the icing on the cake? Every vote you cast earns you a chance to win weekly jewelry prizes from STACKED New York. Vote daily (through July 31st 11pm CST), one winner each week will win a set of 3 stacking bands valued at $450… lucky girls!
10 Easy Ways To Give Back
spend time with seniors
Volunteer to grocery shop for an elderly neighbor who no longer drives or make a friend at your local nursing home.
volunteer at a community garden
If you love to spend time outdoors consider donating your time to a community garden. Not only will you be helping to donate fresh produce to food banks, but you’ll also be beautifying your neighborhood.
make care packages
Collect donation to make care packages for local hospitals or troops overseas.
volunteer at the park
Donate an afternoon of your time to help maintain or improve your local park while you soak up some vitamin D.
donate a specialized skill
If you have a specialized skill (like graphic design, accounting, etc.) chances are a charitable organization or underfunded school could use your help!
Make somebody’s day
This is the simplest but possibly the most important. Make an effort to touch somebody’s day… sometimes all it takes is a genuine smile or a small favor. Be kind and inspire others to do the same.
host a block sale
…and donate the proceeds. Clearing out clutter and supporting a cause at the same time, total win-win.
start a food drive
Organize a food drive at your school or office.
Many non native English speakers need practice to become fluent. Volunteer as a conversational English speaker and you’ll be helping somebody to assimilate into your community and making a new friend.
help our furry friends
Foster an animal waiting for adoption or volunteer at your local animal shelter.
