Happy (belated) birthday to me… a few days ago I celebrated my
2nd annual 29th 30th birthday! I almost went out and took photos in dolled up in a cocktail dress holding balloons in an attempt to look instagram perfect… sometimes as a blogger I feel that’s what the internet expects of me. But let’s keep it real. My birthday landed on a weekday and I woke up early, went to a job interview, worked all day, then headed straight to a (delicious!) birthday dinner, came home and crashed into bed. Real life.
Instead of a falsely glamorized version of my b-day I decided I’d rather share some more real life with you guys. I’ve been doing a lot of reflection leading up to this birthday so here it is: 30 life lessons I learned by age 30.
1. be your own biggest cheerleader
There will be times in your life when it feels like nobody believes in you… believe in yourself.
2. sometimes there is no right answer
This is something I still struggle with accepting when making major life decisions. But I’ve learned that when you end up at a fork in the road sometimes there’s no right or wrong answer, you just have to take a leap of faith and make a choice.
3. embarrassment never killed anybody
Life is too short to live in fear of embarrasment, so make like a badass and go for what you want.
4. keep your friends close
The older you get the harder it is to make new besties, so don’t neglect those relationships!
5. cut your frenimies loose
On the flip side, if somebody is a constant negative influence in your life, let them go.
6. nourish your body
Eat some veggies, get some sleep, take the stairs… whatever you can do to treat your body like a temple. After a few health scares in my mid 20’s I realized what a precious gift a healthy body really is!
7. love the skin you’re in
I think we ALL need this reminder: perfection is not beauty. Stop focusing on your (perceived) flaws and learn to appreciate your own unique beauty.
8. comparison is the thief of joy
Jealousy is human nature but remind yourself of all the joy in your own life instead of focusing on somebody else’s.
9. never stop chasing your dreams
Every day that you make an effort is one day closer to achieving your goals.
10. it’s okay to change your mind
It’s okay to try something and decide it’s not for you, or for your priorities to change.
11. pain is only temporary
Physically and emotionally. We all have scars, but pain is a temporary state… remember that in the painful moments.
12. laugh as often as possible
It will keep you young. And happy.
13. practice random acts of kindness
The best cure for a bad day is making somebody else’s day brighter. My favorite trick: pay for the car behind you in the drive through or toll bridge.
14. try new things
Nobody ever regretted discovering a new favorite food.
15. stay spontaneous
Every once in a while you just need to ditch the day planner and have an adventure!
16. never stop learning
Focus on developing your skills, you never know what doors they’ll open up.
17. the fountain of youth…
Is eye cream and sunscreen. And staying hydrated.
18. give less fucks
Which is a really vulgar (but fun) way of saying that you’ll never be able to please everybody, so stop trying.
19. test your own limits
I’m not the most athletic person but yoga has taught me a lot about life and testing my own limits. Push yourself physically & you’ll probably learn that you’re stronger than you thought. Remind yourself of that moment next time you feel like giving up. It’s a powerful feeling.
20. it’s okay to fail
Failing at something doesn’t make you a failure. Stand tall and move on to the next adventure.
21. love is a journey
Love will change and grow with you as you both age, but with the right person there should be more ups than downs.
22. listen more than you speak
You might be surprised by what you hear.
23. stuff is just stuff
And money is just money. Don’t let either one rule you.
24. success is subjective
At 30 years old I’m not where 20 year old me thought I would be in life, but that’s okay.
25. out of your control
Some things in life are completely out of your control… stop stressing about them.
26. enjoy the journey
Live in the moment and remind yourself to find joy in the day to day.
There are certain hurts & betrayals that you’ll never forget, but forgiveness will bring you the peace to move on.
28. be humble
Be a kind, courteous, nice person.
29. it’s okay to be different
Don’t force yourself into a box you don’t belong in. I used to feel sad that I didn’t “fit in”, but the older I get the more I appreciate that quality about myself & others.
30. Life is a miracle
