A big part of shopping with intent is making carefully planned purchases, so even though we’re just getting into the swing of spring I’ve already got my eye on summer.
The heat of summer sometimes means we’re forgoing fashion just to stay comfortable. Less layers, smaller clothing, lighter makeup… more skin. But sometimes with so much less to wear it’s easy to wonder what we’re left with as the foundation for a stylish summer wardrobe. So let’s get into the nitty gritty of staying chic in the heat and what summer essentials are worth treating as investment pieces. These are my top 5 can’t-live-without-’em summer wardrobe staples… cheap out elsewhere & invest in these basics.
There are very few items that I would call truly timeless, but a classic straw Panama hat is among them. Traditionally a menswear staple, these summer friendly fedoras have been popular for nearly 100 years! I’ve tried cheaper summer hats but nothing compares to a high quality Panama hat for comfort & breathability. Once the summer sun comes out I wear mine almost daily, so it was well worth the $60 price tag.
What takes 2 seconds to put on, feels like pajamas, but actually makes people think you look fancy? Dresses! Sorry men but the joke is on you because nothing is more comfy than a breezy dress (and no closet is complete without a few go-to options). When it’s really hot out I favor loose flowing styles to maximize the air flow.
A killer pair of sunglasses is the perfect way to inject some personality into any simple summer look. I won’t lie… I love cheap trendy sunglasses as much as the next girl – BUT – high quality sunglasses definitely have their merits. The classic Chanel sunnies I bought 10 years ago are still on regular rotation in my wardrobe (and still getting compliments). Choose wisely and they’ll be one of your best summer investments.
Along the same line as those breezy dresses, once the temps rise I vote to linen all the things. It may seem like an extravagance but I promise as soon as you buy your first linen piece you’ll never turn back! By some voodoo magic it’s the closest thing to feeling naked without actually being naked. The wrinkles are worth it.
And by sandals I mean anything but plastic $2 flip flops! There are so many stylish sandals to choose from that defaulting to flip flops should be a crime (dramatic? me?!). When it’s sweltering hot and you can’t add layers to your look, investing in high quality footwear is even more essential to elevate your style! I love my Birks (so comfy), but the options are endless from minimalist slides to dramatic lace up gladiators.
I’m planning to treat myself to a few more dresses and a pair of black Birks this summer… what’s on your summer wardrobe list? Did I miss any must haves for beating the heat? Let me know in the comments!
