Pick 5 Things
There are two types of people when it comes to decluttering… either you’re pumped to tackle your whole closet at once, or the mere thought of doing that fills you with dread. There are two types of people when it comes to closet decluttering, which type are you? http://bit.ly/1U0Sq5J Click To Tweet
I’m one of those people that gets overwhelmed at the thought of tackling a big project all at once (and I’m willing to bet many of you are the same!). I used to have no idea where to start… my brain would shut down and I’d end up procrastinating. It’s called “I’ll do it later” syndrome. But I got sick of being a procrastinator, so I invented a little game for myself.
The game is called Pick 5 Things… it’s pretty self explanatory! You only have to get through 5 things. Pick one up, then do the next, then the next until you’re done. Take a break before you pick 5 more… repeat at your own pace until the project is done. See? So easy! Your brain is so happy to complete small projects & achieve goals along the way.
Keep, Toss, Or Keep For Now?
Grab 5 things from your closet. Are you ready? Try on each item one by one in the mirror and decide which category it falls into: keep, toss, or keep for now.
This part is easy, you probably already know which items you definitely plan to keep. Keep it if:
- It’s one of your favorites
- You wear it all the time
- It makes you feel like a million bucks
- It’s flattering to your body shape and complexion
- It compliments your personal style & your lifestyle needs
This is where the process takes some discipline! You may own plenty of clothing that’s gorgeous, but just not right for you. An item has no place in your closet if:
- It’s not true to your personal style
- It’s not functional for your current lifestyle
- The color or fit is unflattering
- It’s worn out/no longer fits
Bonus tip: If your toss pile is full of designer labels in good condition, you can sell them to offset the cost of new purchases. I’ll be posting a detailed guide on flipping your wardrobe soon! Donate the rest.
Keep For Now (Optional)
If 90% of your clothes end up in the toss pile and you literally won’t have enough to wear, make a keep for now section… we can’t have you walking around naked! As you replace these items, get rid of them.
