If my instagram account were a movie, my hair would be the leading lady and I would be the awkward sidekick. She gets a lot of love and I’m just along for the ride. Actually, I’m blown away by the number of comments I get about my hair because… I’m pretty lazy about styling it! My signature everyday waves are stupid easy and they only take me about 15 minutes to do (second day hair just gets a quick touch up so it’s even faster).
I use a 1 1/4″ barrel with a clamp (just a basic Conair – although I have my eye on this upgrade). For reference I have pretty thick, coarse hair, so experiment with different curling wands to find what works best for you… this is just what works for me!
Take a 1″ section of hair, and clamp the curling iron on about halfway down. Now curl away from your face (you’ll only have the top half of that section in the curling iron).
After a few moments slide the curling iron down until it’s 1″ from your ends, then curl again all the way up. Repeat on each side of your part until you’re done, making sure to always curl away from your face & leave the ends out of the curling iron.
Side note: don’t mind my resting bitch face… it’s hard to take a bathroom mirror selfie while not burning your hair off. I was concentrating!
When you finish you’ll have a head full of scary looking ringlet curls resembling a 2002 prom hairdo (when are butterfly clips coming back?)… don’t panic! Give it a good spray with flexible hold setting spray and let your curls cool down. Ready for the magic?
Brush out the curls and voilà! Perfect curling iron waves. To finish it off I usually run a little argon oil through my hair to smooth out any frizz situations.
Optional step: touch up the ends with a straight iron for a slightly edgier look. I didn’t do that today but it’s a good trick to use if you have a few extra minutes.
Since this is a departure from the regularly scheduled programming here at Classic In Gray let me know what you think! More beauty posts, yay or nay?
