I thought I’d start Monday off with a bang by sharing this DIY that I’m SO excited about! My cosmetic storage situation has been looking pretty pitiful, so I’ve been brainstorming a chic solution for makeup brush storage for quite a while now. I knew leather would be perfect because it’s so durable & easy to work with. When I came across these edgy looking screw posts, inspiration struck me and this DIY leather makeup brush roll was born!
I’ve been using mine for a few weeks now and I’m in love… there’s just something so luxurious about leather accessories! The other fantastic thing about leather? It’s one of the easiest materials to upcycle. I made this brush roll out of an old leather jacket that I bought at the thrift store for less than $10! So I feel great about saving something from the landfill, plus there’s plenty of material left over for future projects. Or you could make a few of these makeup brush rolls as gifts… hello, Mother’s Day?!
Measure your makeup brushes to determine how big your brush roll should be, then cut out a rectangle. Mine was 9.5″ by 12″, and that was big enough for 9 brush slots (my longest brush is 8.5″).
Using a hole punch, punch evenly spaced holes along the vertical center of the leather rectangle. I used 1″ spacing for mine.
Cut a ribbon to approximately 7″ longer than the length of your brush roll. At the center of the ribbon, punch 5 evenly spaced holes to match the holes on the leather rectangle.
Fold under the edge of the elastic and punch a hole through it. Use the screw post to attach it to the first hole in the leather rectangle.
Now leaving some slack in the elastic (depending on the thickness of each makeup brush you are using), continue to punch holes in your elastic and attach to the leather with the screw posts. Stop when you reach the last 5 holes.
On these last holes, attach the ribbon to the outside of the brush roll as you are adding the elastic. When you reach the last hole cut your elastic, turn the edge under again to finish it off nicely, and attach. You’re done!
Now all you have to do is add your brushes, roll it up, and tie! I just love how this all came together, it’s edgy & chic, and I feel so elegant every time I unroll it to do my makeup in the morning!
