Confession time: I love makeup. I’m not much of a girly girl but I’ve always loved playing around with different beauty products… but I’ve been hesitant to share beauty content on the blog because I’m not a beauty blogger. I can’t execute snapchat inspired eyeshadow and I don’t care about Kylie Jenner’s lips. But then I realized… you probably can’t/don’t either right?
So I decided it would be more helpful to share what’s been in my beauty routine this month. I know I love getting product recommendations from blogs so hopefully this is helpful to some of you!
Two Step Cleansing:
A lot of my July beauty routine is inspired by our trip to Japan last month, because I mainly bought beauty products as my souvenirs! In Japan women have a two step cleansing routine: which consists of oil cleansing to remove makeup before using a facial cleansing soap. I’ve been using the affordable DHC Cleanisng Oil followed by MD Rejuvena cleanser.
After cleansing I’ve been following up with the MD Rejuvena Rejuvaphyl line*. I started using these about a month ago and I definitely notice improved hydration, less redness, and my occasional (but horrible) breakouts healing faster. It’s also plant based which I love since I try to stick to natural products wherever possible.
*I received the set as a gift with absolutely no obligation to feature it, I just seriously love the products and have been using them daily. It’s expensive but if you’re in the market for naturally based, premium skincare I highly recommend trying it (a little seems to go a long way).
I briefly mentioned Dr. Rogers Restore on my travel post in June but this is another c/o item that turned out to be a huge win. This stuff is basically a plant based Vaseline alternative. It has earned a permanent home on my night stand since I use it as a lip balm & salve on dry cracked skin.
I prefer a dewy look in the summer and these Canmake Cream Cheek blushers are another fantastic Japanese drugstore find! Apparently they’re often used in J.Crew catalogs and I can totally see why… they go on sheer (but buildable) and give a natural lit from within glow.
YSL Glossy Stain (my favorites are #28 Peche Cerra Cola & #11 Rouge Goache). It’s not really fair to call this a July beauty favorite because I’ve been hooked on this stuff for years. It applies like a gloss but lasts like a stain and it’s not sticky at all.
I picked this up at Narita Airport and now I’m hooked on hydrating mist! It’s just sooo refreshing to give yourself a little lightly scented spritz… who knew?! Unfortunately I can’t find this exact brand online but I’m picking up some Aesop Facial Hydrosol for when I run out.
Where there are hits there will be misses. Fail number one: YSL colored mascara in XX green. I received this free to try out as part of Influenster and it was dislike at first swipe. The dark green color didn’t show up at all on my brunette lashes… except for when my eyes watered and I instantly had green dripping down my face. Potential for public makeup malfunction: high.
24 Hour Tattoo: this was my least favorite Japanese drugstore buy. It promises to stay put but remove easily with water. Well… it removes easily with water but that’s the only positive thing I can say about it. I found the applicator tip to be weak/floppy and my liner smudged after just a few hours (even with primer on my lids). Unfortunately this stuff didn’t live up to the hype, I’m going back to my trusty Stila XX instead.
