Five years ago I was freshly laid off from my job and trying to start a small business from my spare bedroom. As I stood in front of my closet one morning, I realized I had nothing to wear. Don’t get me wrong, I had plenty of clothes! …too many clothes! (Sound familiar?) Clothes that weren’t my style, were completely impractical (like the “but what if I’m invited to a tea party?!” dress), or starting to look ratty because I was wearing the same handful of items all the time.
The turmoil in my closet was holding me back from being the confident babe I knew I could be, and I was determined to change that. So I did what any normal girl would do: I consulted the internet seeking the answers. But the thing is… style tips are so generic! And personal style is definitely not one size fits all. The solution? I came up with my own system to create the perfect wardrobe… it’s called a lean closet.*
The 3 Perfect Wardrobe Fundamentals:
1. Build a foundation
In order for a wardrobe to be functional, it should be built on a core foundation of staple pieces. Pieces that are practical, flattering, and classic enough to keep around for the next 3 to 5 years. My lean closet system isn’t a list of must have items, it’s a guideline to help you to discover what’s perfect for you.
2. Sprinkle on some fun
Let’s be real, wearing the same 10 outfits on repeat for years would be totally lame! An important part of this process is not only learning how to style your basics for maximum versatility, but also leaving room to have fun with statement pieces & seasonal trends.
3. Just say no to excess
It’s not called a lean closet for no reason! The exact size of your lean closet will vary based your lifestyle, but if you have the right wardrobe you won’t need a big wardrobe.
Sounds Awesome Right?
